Background: The United Nations Secretary-General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim, who is currently on a tour of Middle East countries, met President Anwar Sadat of Egypt in Alexandria on Saturday (8 June). Dr. Waldheim had arrived in Egypt on Thursday, having previously visited Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Israel.
The Secretary-General was flown to Alexandria by helicopter, after touring the eleven-nation U.N. emergency force in the Suez Canal area. He had spent the night in the Suez area, and then flew form Cairo for his meeting with President Sadat in Alexandria.
The two men talked together for more than an hour, and the subjects they discussed included the Middle East situation, the future of Portugal, and the role of the United Nations, A spokesman later described the meeting as most helpful.
Dr. Waldheim's three-day visit to Egypt was due to end on Sunday, when he was expected to leave for Khartoum for a meeting with the Sudanese leaders. He is then scheduled to end his current tour in Mogadishu is Somalia, where the summit meeting of the Organisation of African Unity is due to open shortly.
