Background: Middle level management took to the streets of Paris on November 18 to protest at the policies of the French Socialist government, led by President Francois Mitterrand. Members of the Confederation Generale de Cadres (CGC) carried banners decrying the nationalisation of some big business and industries. Bank executives involved held a one day stoppage so they could join the demonstration. A plough and oxen were used to symbolise an expression used by the French that priorities are in the wrong order. Leading the march was the president of the CGC, M. Jean Meru. The protest also drew attention to what the demonstrators described as -- the lack of protection to their wage value, the size of contributions to support the welfare state and future job security. They also accused the Mitterrand government of confusing unity within the ranks of workers with social hatred.
