Background: Motor racing...the American driver Mario Andretti is well placed for his third successive grand Prix after securing pole position for the Swedish Grand Prix at practice on Friday (16 June). His strongest opposition is expected to come from the Brabham-Alfa team, who take second and third grid positions after the last practice session at Anderstorp Circuit.
SYNOPSIS: France's Jean Pierre Jabouille looked set for a good position after early practice runs, but slipped back later. Andretti, in his sleek black Lotus 79, dominated with consistently good times. Brabham drivers Niki Lauda and John Watson finished strongly to make the front line with Andretti.
Swedish ace Ronnie Peterson pushed his Lotus hard to keep up with team mate Andretti during the practice sessions, but was forced into fourth pole position by the Brabham-Alfas. Andretti, who is leading in the World Championship after winning the Belgian and Spanish Grand Prix, notched up the fastest time on the revised Anderstorp circuit and says the right choice tyres will seal the race for him. Besides Australia's Lauda and Ireland's Watson, stiff competition is sure to come from South Africa's Jody Scheckter. He has won the Swedish Grand Prix twice in the past five years.
