    Background: THEPA BEACH, SOUTHERN THAILAND

A beach in Southern Thailand was invaded by troops, warships and helicopters on August 6, but it was all in the name of education. An estimated two thousand United States and Thai marines assaulted the beach as part of a month-long join exercise in the area. The exercise, code-named "Cobra Gold '84", was designed to provide valuable experience for both groups in modern warfare. All together, more than fifteen-thousand troops took part in the operation, along with warships, jet fighters and helicopters. The beach assault on the final day was a fitting climax to the manoeuvres. Before the marine landing, the beach was subjected to a simulated air attack by Thai and U.S. jets. The troops were then ferried ashore using helicopters and landing craft. Military officials involved in the exercise said it was a resounding success.
