    IN: "That's merely speculation....."

    OUT: "....here fruitlessly".

    TRUDEAU: That's merely speculation.

REPORTER: Do you have a figure in mind?

TRUDEAU: We have budgeted for financial reasons for a certain number, but we're not mentioning any figure.

REPORTER: Is three-thousand high for what you've budgeted?

TRUDEAU: Well, I'd say it's pure speculation and I wouldn't want to involve myself in it.

REPORTER: How much consideration has been given to the possibility of backlash because of unemployment in the country already?

TRUDEAU: Well, I think that would be for the people to consider and I think Canadians generally are open to the kind of refugee problem. I would imagine that if a vast quantity of people were dumped on the labour market in some places where there is high unemployment there might to a backlash. But, I think the general principal of Canada helping people in need and distress is accepted by all Canadians.

REPORTER: The aim will be then to disperse them to areas where there is not high unemployment.

TRUDEAU: I suppose it would be a natural thing for them to want to go where there is not high unemployment.

REPORTER: Will there be special training programmes for them at all?

TRUDEAU: I don't know. Mr Mackasey is dispatching a team to Uganda now to see who wants to apply, what kind of areas they want to apply for, and so on. We will only know then of we need special programmes. But, there are funds allocated to make sure they are not coming here fruitlessly.

Background: Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau said Friday (25 August) that he will not play "the numbers game" over the amount of Asians to be granted entry into Canada following their expulsion from Uganda.

he acknowledged that Canada has budgeted for an intake of a certain number of the fifty-thousand British-passport Asians who are to be expelled. He said these funds were "to make sure they are not coming here fruitlessly".

Mr Trudeau said he did not expect any backlash from Canadians who "generally are open to this kind of refugee problem." But, he said he did not expect that the Asians coming to Canada would be going to areas with high unemployment.

A team of Canadian officials is scheduled to fly to Uganda next week to interview prospective immigrants. The first task of the group will be to determine how many Asians wish to come to Canada.

SYNOPSIS: Canada has greed to take some of the fifty-thousand Asians being expelled by Uganda's President Idi Amin. Canada's immigration Minister Bryce Mackasy has said the number of Asians admitted to the country could be between three and five thousand. Canada's prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was asked in Ottawa Friday about this figure of five-thousand.
