Background: The Iraqi High Command announced on July 16 that the Iranians had launched an attack on the southern Iraqi city of Basra, but had been repulsed. Iraq said the Iranians lost 5,000 men killed and 60 tanks destroyed in fierce tank battles that followed their invasion. But Iran said its troops were still inside Iraq, were digging in, and had advanced to within 15 kilometres of Basra. Iran accused the Iraqi air force of having bombed targets deep inside Iran causing heavy civilian casualties. Meanwhile in Baghdad and other Iraqi cities there were large anti-Iranian demonstrations, with many Iraqis taking to the streets waving flags and banners. Military spokesmen made speeches and excited spectators cheered and joined in, calling for the routing of Ayatollah Khomeini's army. In Iran, huge crowds marched through the streets demanding the "liberation" of Jerusalem and the Iraqi holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.
