    Background: SOUTH-WEST THAI/KAMPUCHEAN BORDER, KAMPUCHEA

Kampuchean resistance groups claim to have scored several victories against the Vietnamese-backed Kampuchean forces. Between September and November, guerrilla factions such as the Democratic Kampuchean National Army stepped up their attacks on the occupying vietnamese. The guerrillas believe the Vietnamese are mounting a major dry season offensive against them, using fresh military supplies from the Soviet Union. Recent engagements have resulted in heavy losses on both sides. The resistance claims that during the rainy season they killed or injured 22,000 pro-government troops, destroyed 19 tanks, a number of trucks, and seized a large amount of weapons. The Kampuchean resistance is receiving military and economic aid from China and a Chinese film crew recently visited the front-line. The guerrillas claimed to have the support of Kampuchean people, with women form local villages helping make and set traps on jungle trails. Chinese sources claim that Vietnamese troops were forced back 16 kilometres (10 miles) north form Highway Six, a route vital for Vietnamese troop deployment and supply in Kampuchea's western front.
