Background: While hopes rise for a settlement to the Vietnam conflict, young people in North Vietnam are still spending their spare time learning to use weapons in case the war goes on.

This official North Vietnamese film, shows an anti-aircraft unit in Thai Binh province, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) south-east of Hanoi. The unit is made up of girls aged between 17 and 24 -- and they say they have already shot down two United States Phantom-4 fighter-bombers. They practice for up to five hours a day.

Elsewhere in the province a group of youngsters are in charge of dikes on the Red River. They work day and night to repair dikes and roads damaged by bombing. But his year the rains were light, and there was no flooding.
