Background: In Paris, Sept 9 - on the fifth day of the "Jeanson network" trial- a number of municipal councillors representing the UNR, Independent and Republican Centre parties laid wreaths outside the military tribunal at Cherche-Midi, in protest against the way in which proceedings are being conducted. Among those taking part in the protest action, closely watched by police standing by to forestall incidents, was M. Devraigne, ex-Mayor of Paris.

The Jeanson trial, of six Algerian Muslims and 17 young French intellectuals accused of forming a network to shelter FLN agents in France and of carrying messages and money for them, has so far been taken up mostly by legal argument.

First there was a question of having the proceedings translated into Arabic for the benefit of the Muslim defendants, then the defence demanded the dismissal of the president of the tribunal on grounds of partiality.

On Sept 7, the hearing started over two hours late because the accused refused to be taken to court in a police van. Another retarding factor was the absence of half the witnesses for prosecution and defence. The following day's hearing began more than three hours late. This time the women defendants refused to appear, whereupon the defence demanded the postponement of the whole trial.

Sept 9 brought another incident, when two of the defence lawyers were suspended, for periods of six and four months, because of statements they made the previous day. Meanwhile, the Algerian defendants are claiming that the tribunal is incompetent to try them.
