    CROWDS MOVING OFF FROM THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE RULING TANGANYIKA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION HEADQUARTERS FOR THE FIVE-MILE (EIGHT-KM) MARCH TO THE JANGWANI SPORTS PARK. THE PROCESSION INCLUDED TANU SUPPORTERS, A POLICE BAND, AND UNITS OF THE TANGANYIKA RIFLES. PLACARDS CARRIED ACCUSATIONS AGAINST WESTERN COUNTRIES,. THREATS AND WARNINGS TO WHITE-RULED AFRICAN STATES AND TERRITORIES, AND SLOGANS IN SUPPORT OF PRESIDENT NYERERE. ON THE WAY, THE PROCESSION STOPPED OUTSIDE THE BUILDING HOUSING THE AMERICAN EMBASSY, WHERE SOME OF THE CROWD SHOUTED "GET OUT!" THEN SCENES AT THE RALLY, WHICH BEGAN WITH SONGS AND SLOGAN-SHOUTING, INCLUDING "NYERERE SI, YANKEE NO."

HE SAID: "I HAVE BEEN TOLD THE PLOT IS NOT TRUE. BUT I WILL SHOW THE AMERICANS THE DOCUMENTS AND IF THEY CAN CONVINCE ME THEY ARE FALSE, I WILL BE THE FIRST TO THANK GOD."
    PRESIDENT NYERERE SPOKE IN SWAHILI FOR MORE THAN AN HOUR AT THE RALLY. THE DOCUMENTS HE REFERRED TO WERE PUBLISHED LAST WEEK IN THE TANZANIA GOVERNMENT'S NEWSPAPER, BACKING ALLEGATIONS BY THE FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. OSCAR KAMBONA, OF THE PLOT. THE UNITED STATES HAS QUESTIONED THE DOCUMENTS' AUTHENTICITY, WHILE BRITAIN HAS DENIED ANY KNOWLEDGE OF THE PLOT.

    THE TANZANIAN LEADER STRESSED HIS GOVERNMENT'S DESIRE TO REMAIN NON-ALIGNED IN WORLD POLITICS, ADDING: "I WANT TO ASSURE YOU ALL IN DAR-ES-SALAAM AND ELSEWHERE THAT WE HAVE NO QUARREL WITH THE AMERICANS."
