Background: Panathinaikos of Athens beat Floriana Valletta 4-0 in the second leg of their European Cup opening round match in Athens on Wednesday (28 September). The teams had drawn 1-1 in their first-leg match in Malta two weeks previously.
SYNOPSIS: Floriana kick off before a crowd of 20,000. Their first attack was merely a series of long, uncontrolled kicks downfield and the rival goalkeeper coped easily.
It didn't take long for Panathinaikos to move into control, putting the Floriana defence under constant stress, which they didn't always cope with calmly. A curling free kick came within inches of bringing Panathinaikos' first goal.
When the first Greek goal did come, it was a very soft affair. After a goalmouth scramble, which showed the flaws in the Floriana back lines, the ball simply bobbled into a corner of the net.
Panathinaikos had so much of the ball, it was inevitable that they would break through again A forward sandwiched and brought down meant a penalty kick which Antonaides drove firmly into the roof of the netting.
Even the scoring was unimpressive in this dull game. When the Panathinaikos forwards rose for a centre, the ball struck the inside of the right-hand upright. But it had crossed the line for the Athens tem's third goal.
