Background: ISRAEL TODAY (THURSDAY) SHOWED A TOKEN OF HER MILITARY MIGHT IN A PARADE MARKING THE SEVENTEENTH ANNIVERSARY OF HER INDEPENDENCE. GUIDED MISSILES, TANKS AND ARMOURED VEHICLES HEADED THE PARADE OF ALL THE ARMED SERVICES STAGED JUST NORTH OF TEL AVIV.

AN ESTIMATED HALF-A-MILLION PEOPLE LINED THE ROUTE OF THE PARADE WHICH TOOK ALMOST ONE HOUR TO PASS THE REVIEWING STAND. THE SALUTE WAS TAKEN BY PRESIDENT SHAZAR AND THE ISRAELI PRIME MINISTER AND DEFENCE MINISTER, MR. ESHKOL.

SEVERAL NEW WEAPONS WERE SHOWN TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME. THEY INCLUDED THE HAWK ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILE, THE 160-MILLIMETRE MORTAR, DESIGNED AND BUILT IN ISRAEL, AND THE L-70 RADAR-CONTROLLED ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN. FRENCH-BUILT AMX-13, SHERMAN AND CENTURION TANKS WERE ALSO ON SHOW, BUT NONE OF THE M-60 TANKS, REPORTEDLY SUPPLIED TO ISRAEL BY WEST GERMANY.

FOLLOWING THE ARMOUR AND GUNS WERE FOOT UNITS REPRESENTING ALL THE CORPS OF THE ISRAEL DEFENCE FORCES. ONE OF THE UNITS TO RECEIVE THE LOUDEST CHEERS OF THE CROWD WAS A UNIT FROM ISRAEL'S WOMEN'S ARMY CORPS.

AFTER THE MARCH PAST, THE ISRAEL AIR FORCE STAGED ONE OF ITS BIGGEST-EVER INDEPENDENCE DAY DISPLAYS. MORE THAN 100 AIRCRAFT - FROM THE SUPER-SONIC MIRAGE 111 TO THE PIPER CUB LIASON AND SPOTTER PLANE - FLEW OVER THE REVIEWING STAND IN FORMATION. THE DISPLAY ENDED WITH SUPER-MYSTERE AND LOCALLY BUILT FOUGA-MAGISTER JET TRAINERS TRAILING SMOKE.
