Background: One of the shortest, fastest and richest horse races in the world was run on Sunday (10 June) in the United States.

It was the Kansas Futurity, one of the three races for the Triple Crown of quarter-horse racing. The combined purse was 350,000 dollars U.S. (GBP130,000 sterling approx).

The field of 10 narrowed down form 225 qualifiers, were all a special type called the quarter-horse, originally bred for great speed and stamina over a short distance for use in cattle driving.

The winner of the quarter mile race was Passover, owned by a Texan. Passover won the race in 17.4 seconds, putting it among the favourites for the other two races in the Triple Crow - the Rainbow Futurity, in August and the All-American Futurity in September.
