JAGGER: "There has been a continuous campaign of destabilisation against Nicaragua and, of course, what is the result is that you have today economic chaos in Nicaragua. But it has all been, I think it has all been a sop, you know. It has all been prepared, it has all been calculate, you know, that one of the ways of destroying the revolution will be by creating a pro-war and economic destabilisation against this country. And what you have today is the result of what the United States has been doing systematically against Nicaragua."



D'ESCOTO: "With all due respect to Cuba and Mexico, and to any other country, we are intent only in becoming a first true, sovereign, independent Nicaragua. We are not a puppet of the United States nor of any other country."

Background: INTRODUCTION: The worsening relations between the United States and the Central American country of Nicaragua were a central theme of discussions at the opening day of the Organisation of American States (OAS) in St.Lucia on Wednesday (2 December).In recent months, officials in Washington have accused the Sandanista authorities in Nicaragua of supplying arms to revolutionary groups throughout the Caribbean region.

SYNOPSIS:
The United States has also expressed concern at the build-up of Nicaragua's own military forces.

These are alleged to include Soviet-built Mig 17 and 21 jets due to be delivered from Cuba next year.Nicaraguan pilots are said to be training in Bulgaria and Czechoslovakia.

Washington also alleges the Sandanistas are ferrying weapons to left-wing guerrillas in neighbouring Central American states like El Salvador.This rally in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, illustrates the anti-American feeling in the country.Reports speak of an increasing Soviet-bloc influence, with estimates saying there are over 6,000 Cuban and Eastern European advisors in Nicaragua.

These are worrying developments for the United States, which is associated in Managua with the previous rule of General Anastasio Somoza, overthrown in July 1979.Nicaragua is still a relatively poor country despite, or as the Americans argue, because of, the build-up of the armed forces.United States economic policy in the region came under attack at the OAS meeting.One of Nicaragua's most famous exports, model Bianca Jagger who now speaks on behalf of the Sandanista government, blamed America for her country's poverty.

The country's allies, especially Cuba, would endorse that view, which is portrayed graphically in these revolutionary poster.A large hillside sign standing for the Frente Sandanista de Liberacion Nacional (FSLN) reminds Nicaraguans of their own armed struggle.

United States Secretary of State Alexander Haig arrived in the Caribbean island of St.Lucia on Wednesday (2 December) to give Washington's view on the arms build-up in Nicaragua.

Whilst in St.Lucia for the OAS meeting Secretary Haig met Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Miguel D'Escoto to discuss their differences.Mr.D'Escoto talked of his country's revolution.
