Background: Sudan made sure of their first medals in the All-African Student Games in Accra on Thursday (January 2), by battling through to a place in the final of the soccer tournament. They did it at the expense of the home side, Ghana.
Sudan went ahead after 25 minutes, when inside left Karam Alla beat Ghana goalkeeper Bawa with a short-range volley. Then they withstood heavy pressure, especially in the second half, to prevent Ghana from scoring an equaliser. Their opponents in the final will be Egypt.
In the volleyball tournament, the Nigerian women's team was making up for a disastrous start in the competition. In their opening game, they took a 2-0 lead over Ghana only to lose three games to two.
But they made no mistake in Thursday's match, wearing down and then overwhelming the Liberian team to win 15-11, 15-9, 15-1.
