Background: U.N. special envoy, Gunnar Jarring, met the U.N. Secretary-General U Thant on Monday (Jan. 4) before beginning the round of discussions with representatives of Israel, the U.A.R. and Jordan that would announce the resumption of the Middle East peace talks.
Israel, which walked out of the talks last September charging Egypt with violations of the standstill ceasefire, was the first to resume contact with Dr. Jarring. By the end of Tuesday, Dr. Jarring had seen representatives from all three countries.
Though there was none of the optimism that attended the start of the talks last August 25, when the normally taciturn Dr. Jarring spoke of "moving into history", diplomats were gratified that the long procedural deadlock had been broken.
