TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 14: "I THINK IT'S STUPID FOR THE SIMPLE REASON THAT IF SOMEBODY HAD SOME DOPE I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS WOULD BE THE PERMANENT PURPOSE OF THIS."

QUESTION: "DO YOU TRAVEL THROUGH THE BORDER VERY OFTEN?"

ANSWER: "IT'S THE FIRST TIME I'VE BEEN DOWN HERE IN 10 YEARS."

QUESTION: "NOW THAT YOU'VE TRIED AND GOT CAUGHT IN A TRAFFIC JAM LIKE THIS HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT IT FOR FUTURE REFERENCE?"

ANSWER: "IT'LL BE ANOTHER 10 YEARS, BELIEVE ME. I THINK IT'S RIDICULOUS, ESPECIALLY ON A SUNDAY. IT'LL BE THE LAST TIME I COME TO MEXICO. WE CAME DOWN HERE TO GET AWAY FROM THE TRAFFIC, NOT TO STAND IN IT FOR FOUR HOURS."

Background: THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT'S CLAMPDOWN ON DRUG TRAFFICKING ACROSS THE MEXICAN BORDER NETTED ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT OF MARIJUANA YESTERDAY BUT THERE WERE STORMS OF PROTEST FROM PEOPLE CROSSING THE BORDER.

INFURIATED AMERICAN TOURISTS WHO CROSSED INTO MEXICAN BORDER TOWNS FOR THE WEEKEND, WERE HELD UP FOR SIX HOURS OR MORE ON THEIR RETURN WHILE CUSTOMS MEN SEARCHED VEHICLES IN "OPERATION INTERCEPT". THE CHECKS COVERED 2,500 MILES (4,000 KMS) OF MEXICAN/U.S. BORDER FROM TEXAS TO CALIFORNIA AND INCLUDED LAND AND SEA PATROLS AS WELL.

CUSTOMS OFFICIALS ADMITTED THAT THE SEARCH OF EVERY CAR HAD RESULTED IN LESS CONTRABAND AND DRUGS THAN PRODUCED BY A SPOT CHECK OF ABOUT ONE IN 20 CARS -- THE NORMAL RATE AT BORDER POSTS.

ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE OPERATION YESTERDAY, SEVENTEEN PEOPLE WERE ARRESTED -- 11 IN CALIFORNIA AND SIX IN MEXICO -- FOR POSSESSION OF DRUGS.
