Background: ODESSA, USSR
In Odessa, three new world weightlifting records were set by Soviet competitors on March 4 during the Soviet Union hosted International Cup of Friendship tournament. This is 22 year old student, Vladimir Grachov establishing a new record lift of 154 kilograms (340 pounds) in the middleweight body weight category. Grachov's lift was a snatch -- he lifted the weight above his head in one move. In the light heavyweight category, Victor Durnev's record lift in the snatch of 163 kilograms (359 pounds) stood for only a few minutes. His effort was superseded by a lift of 163.5 kilograms (360 pounds) set in the snatch, by Vladimir Kuznetsov. The strain of such a weight showed on Kuznetsov's face while he held the dumb-bells above his head and waited for the judges lights to come on signalling that his lift had been successful. The relief of winning was also apparent when he smiled at his triumph as the crowd applauded.
