Background: MUCH OF ITALY WAS PARALYSED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) WHEN A MILLION CIVIL SERVANTS WENT ON A ONE-DAY STRIKE FOR MORE PAY, WITH DEMANDS ALSO FOR JOB RE-CLASSIFICATION. THE COUNTRY WAS LEFT WITHOUT SCHOOLS, POSTAL SERVICES, AND TRAINS.

ROME'S USUALLY BUSTLING STATIONS WERE DESERTED. NO ITALY TRAINS RAN AND INTERNATIONAL EXPRESSES WERE HALTED AT THE FRONTIER. SOME PEOPLE WAITED FOR BUSES, BUT THERE JUST WERE NOT ENOUGH.

THE STRIKE ENDS AT MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, BUT OTHERS ARE PLANNED FOR TWO DAYS NEXT WEEK UNLESS THE CIVIL SERVANTS' DEMANDS ARE MET. ALTHOUGH GOVERNMENT AND UNIONS ARE MEETING TOMORROW TO TRY TO SETTLE THE DISPUTE, THE MINISTER FOR CIVIL SERVICE REFORM HAS ALREADY WARNED THAT THE GOVERNMENT CANNOT TAKE ON FINANCIAL BURDEN. BEYOND THE STATE BUDGET APPROVED LAST WEEK.

MEANWHILE, TECHNICIANS OF THE NATIONAL BROADCASTING CORPORATION HAVE GONE ON STRIKE UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. RECORDED MUSIC WAS BEING BROADCAST ON ALL THREE RADIO NETWORKS.
