Background: ALL PRODUCTION AT FORD'S 23 PLANTS THROUGHOUT BRITAIN IS AT A STANDSTILL. ON FEBRUARY 24TH ABOUT 20,000 FORD WORKERS BEGAN AN UNOFFICIAL STRIKE OVER THE COMPANY'S PROPOSED PENALTY CLAUSES - THE WITHHOLDING OF FRINGE BENEFITS FROM WORKERS WHO BANNED OVERTIME OR WENT ON UN-OFFICIAL STRIKE - AND WITHIN 48 HOURS THE STRIKE WAS MADE OFFICIAL BY THE TWO BIG MOTOR-WORKER'S UNIONS REPRESENTING 28,000 MEMBERS.

A TIDE OF RESENTMENT AGAINST AMERICAN MANAGEMENT METHODS BUILT UP AT FORDS. RELATIONS BETWEEN SHOP STEWARDS, UNION LEADERS ON THE FACTORY FLOOR, AND FORDS NEW AMERICAN ADMINISTRATION IN BRITAIN ARE POOR. ONE SHOP STEWARD IS QUOTED AS SAYING "BEFORE THE BRITISH FORDS WERE BOUGHT UP BY THE YANKS THERE WAS A TREMENDOUS FEELING OF COMRADESHIP IN THE PLANT. YOU COULD TALK TO A DIRECTOR JUST THE SAME AS YOUR MATE AT THE NEXT BENCH THERE WAS NO TOUCHING OF FORELOCKS THEN". ANOTHER SAID, "IT'S ALL SO BLOODY IMPERSONAL YOU NO LONGER FEEL SECURE, SOMEHOW".

FORDS RESPONDED TO THE STRIKE BEING MADE OFFICIAL BY SLAPPING A LEGAL INJUNCTION ON THE UNIONS CONCERNED, RESTRAINING THEM FROM BACKING THE STRIKE. THIS MADE RELATIONS EVEN WORSE, AND IN SPITE OF RECONCILIATION ATTEMPTS BY MRS. BARBARA CASTLE, SECRETARY OF STATE FOR EMPLOYMENT AND PRODUCTIVITY, THE TWO SIDES HAVE REMAINED BITTERLY OPPOSED.

BY NOW, THE STRIKE HAS COST FORDS WELL OVER 30,000 POUNDS STERLING IN LOST PRODUCTION, WITH MORE THAN 40,000 VEHICLES LOST. A FURTHER BLOW HIT FORDS TODAY. EUROPE'S BIGGEST CAR HIRE FIRM CANCELLED AN ORDER FOR 500 CARS AND WARNED THAT THEY MAY HAVE TO CANCEL AN ORDER FOR A FURTHER 1,500 IF PRODUCTION IS HELD UP MUCH LONGER. OTHER HIRE ORGANISATIONS HAVE WARNED THAT THEY MAY HAVE TO BUY ELSEWHERE.

MRS. CASTLE IS EXPECTED TO TAKE A DIRECT HAND IN AN EFFORT TO END THE STRIKE THAT IS COSTING BRITAIN 1 MILLION STERLING EVERYDAY IN LOST VITAL EXPORTS.
