Background: The first World Power Conference to be held in Africa opened in Accra -- capital of Ghana -- last Monday (Aug 14).

Delegates from 24 countries, including Ghana and Nigeria, are attending. The World Power Conference, established in 1924, comprises 61 countries and aims at furthering power technology development and assisting member states solve their power problems.

Ghana's hosting of the one-week conference stems from her potential hydro-electric scheme and the construction of the one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

The conference was opened by the Chairman of the International Executive Council, Lord Hinton of Britain. Lord Hinton described Ghana as a country which is facing many problems with "courage, imagination and cheerfulness". He added that Ghana had a great potential for development.

The Ghanaian delegation included Dr. E.S. Sackey, engineering adviser of the Volte River Authority and Mr. E.L. Quartey chief executive of the Volta River Authority.

Some of the countries attending the conference are: Britain, West Germany. France, Soviet Union, United States, Canada, Japan, Italy and Austria.
