Background: Arsenal and Leeds - both leading in the First Division Soccer Championship - have been participating in a cliff-hanger for three weeks, with first one and then the other taking the lead. Today (Saturday), was no exception. Both teams, playing at home, defeated their opponents. Arsenal beat Stoke City 1-0, and Leeds beat Nottingham Forest 2-0. At the end of today's play, Leeds had 64 points and Arsenal had 63. Now, with only one more match to paly against Tottenham Hotspurs on Monday (May 3), Arsenal must either win or draw 0-0 to win the Championship - if they lose or score-draw, they lose to Leeds on goal average.
The Arsenal goal was put past Stoke Captain (and England Goalkeeper) Gordon Banks by Eddie Kelly - who came in as a substitute for injured Pater Storey.
The first Leeds goal was scored by Captain Billy Bremner after 25 minutes; the second, just three minutes from half-time, by Peter Lorimer.
Arsenal are also trying for a "double" - when they meet Liverpool in the Football Association (F.A.) Cup Final next Saturday (May 8 ).
