Background: Hundred of women from throughout the world are in Mexico City attending a two-week International Women's Year Conference, which started one Thursday (June 19). The conference is aimed at launching a ten-year programme to end discrimination against women, and to increase participation by women in world affairs.
SYNOPSIS: In an opening address, the United Nations Secretary-General, Dr Kurt Waldheim, said it is wrong to think of women's rights as a luxury. He went on:
WALDHEIM: "The issues which face this conference cannot be briefly described. Although they include fundamental issues of basic human rights, it is not simply a human rights question. Although it involves serious and important economic issues, it is not merely a debate out economics. While it will concern itself with the need to abolish legislation in practices which discriminate against women, it is not only concerned with legalities. Each of these elements forms a part of the much wider problem, namely the establishment of real chances and opportunities for women.
