Background: This week the first Nobel 200 cars are off the assembly-line, and, at GBP398 (including purchase tax) and a running cost of around 1/2 d. a mile Britain gets its cheapest family car. Purchase tax alone is 50% below that of conventional makes.
For years this country has lagged behind in the lightweight car field. Continental progress has led to a repeated question: when will Britain challenge the European market? New York Noble Industries Ltd., give the answer - a family limousine of conventional design and modern styling with a speed of over 60 m.p.h., and fuel consumption of 90 m.p.g. and more.
Mr. Cyril Lord is Chairman of York Noble Industries Ltd., and Mr. York Noble is managing director. The Nobel 200 comes fresh to the home market from the Engineering Division of Short Bros. & Harland Ltd. The body work of the first models is in peacock blue and white, the two-tone plastic bodies being made by Short Bros. & Harland's associated company, the Bristol Aeroplane Company. It is planned to extend the colour range in the near future.
The Nobel is a redesigned and vastly improved version of the super-economy German car, the Fuldamobil. Styling is well up to the smartest sports car. With its 200 c.c. engine and four-speed synchromesh gearbox, the car will prove an immediate favourite with women drivers. There is accommodation for two adults and two children. Lively-handling and compact size ( 10 1/2 ft. long and 4 ft. 7 ins. wide) will ease parking problems and make for comfortable driving in traffic-crowded streets.
As the 'Nobel 200' is a three-wheeler (two front and one back) it qualifies for the cheap GBP5 a year tax, compared with GBP12 10s. Od. for a four-wheel car. Purchase Tax too, is only half the rate applicable to ordinary motor cars.
Servicing is extremely simple. The makers are aiming at a network of 300 service agents to form a nation-wide service and spares organization.
Three main things - economy, convenience and style - give the Nobel 200 a head-start in its field. The designers have moved far from the single-seater 'bubble' conception of light-weight motoring. The new car places an economical and smartly-styled vehicle at the disposal of the man who wants to drive his family in a light-weight, and the car owner who needs a second car for easy town motoring for himself and his wife at a cheaper rate than ever before possible.
