Background: In a generally lack-lustre game Argentina narrowly defeated Romania by two goals to one on Monday (22 April) in the first of their training matches for the World Cup soccer championships in June.
The win came after a poor first half which exposed Argentina's weak defenses and left Roumania with a deserved one-nil lead.
But in the second half Houseman replaced wing Chazarreta and quickly electrified the Argentinean backs. Just eleven minutes after joining the game Houseman scored the equaliser.
The decisive goal came in the 29th minute when Kempes beat the Roumanian goalkeeper and scored unopposed.
SYNOPSIS: playing in their first international training match for the World Cup final in June, Argentina managed a narrow two-one victory over Roumania on monday.
The generally lack-lustre game played at the Velez Stadium in Buenos Aires, quickly showed up the poor form of both teams.
The first goal of the game came when Roumania, using their superior passing skills, moved rapidly up the right wing. Centre forward Kun took the ball in middle field, eluded the goalkeeper and scored easily.
For the rest of the first half the Roumanians dominated the play with faster passing and a greater willingness to attack. But despite poor covering by the Argentine defence they failed to score again.
The second half began with a change in the Argentine team when Houseman replaced winger Chazarreta. Almost immediately Houseman began to take charge of the Argentine attack and in just eleven minutes he scored the equalising goal. Faced with a possible draw both sides began playing more adventurous football with Argentine gaining greater possession as their passing improved. However it was not until the twenty-ninth minute that Argentina scored the decisive goal. In a fast move upfield Argentina managed to beat most of the Roumanina defence leaving inside left Kempes facing only the goalkeeper. His hard drive was only partially deflected, giving Argentina a narrow two-one victory.
