Background: Monsoon floods have ravaged upper India for the past six weeks, killing at least 280 people and directly affecting ten million more, according to statistics revealed in the past few days. In the Nadia District of West Bengal, East Pakistani refugee camps have been swept away and the refugees have had to be moved to higher ground. The whole area is in grave danger, meanwhile, as many rivers continue to rise. The Indian Government has provided the refugees with 25,000 plastic sheets for use as emergency shelter, and contingency plane for emergency food rations are being carried out as flood waters have destroyed over one hundred million pounds (sterling) worth of crops in seven states.

Emergency food plans have been put into operation, as the floods have destroyed at least a hundred million pounds worth of crops. This particular area, the Nadia District of West Bengal, continues to be in grave danger as the any rivers there rise constantly.

Elsewhere, millions of people have been driven from their homes and hundreds of thousands of housed destroyed--and the monsoon season is not yet over.
