Background: North Vietnamese Premier Pham Van Dong said last week that the Viet Cong's victory in the South gives the whole of Vietnam an opportunity to "grow by leaps and bounds in all respects".
Speaking to thousands of North Vietnamese at a May Day rally in Hanoi, the Premier said the people would now succeed in building a unified and independent Vietnam.
He also said, "We will continue to fulfil our internationalist obligations to the people of Laos and Cambodia."
May Day was celebrated in the North Vietnamese capital by a large indoor rally attended by Government Ministers.
Fireworks and thousand of people with flags and banners flocking to the centre of the city for a huge public rally also helped celebrate International Labour Day.
