    Background: HARRACHOV, CZECHOSLOVAKIA

At the world ski flying championships, held in Harrachov on March 18, third place was taken by East Germany's Ulf Findeisen. Fellow East German Holger Freitag won second place, with a total of 365 points. The competitor who took first place was Nykanen Matti from Finland. A large crowd applauded as the winners were presented with their prizes. Ski flying is similar in principle to ski-jumping, which is recognised as official Olympic sport. In ski flying, competitors have a longer run-up to 198 metres - and consequently have a faster take-off time, which can rise to 115 kilometres per hour. At the world championships held in West Germany two years ago, the current world record of 180 metres was set by a 21-year-ld Austrian ski flier, Armin Kogler.
