Background: Visnews filmed May 27 at Haifa civil airport, Israel where a three-engined Lebanese Savoya Marchetti S.M.-79 light bomber was forced down by Israel Mystere IV jet fighters after flying over Israel territory near Kibbutz Ayelet Hashabar, Upper Galilee.

The Lebanese 'plane carried a five-man crew and aerial photography equipment. According to information from Haifa films found abroad the Lebanese bomber were developed and showed that photographs of Israel territory had been taken.

The Israel delegation to the Israel-Lebanese Armistice Commission requested an emergency meeting of the M.A.C. which took place at 10.30 May 28 at Rosh Hanikra.

The Mystere jet fighters, which intercepted the Lebanese aircraft, instructed the pilot to land, but when he apparently disregarded the order a few warming shots were fired. The Lebanese pilot then headed for Haifa, where the crew were questioned at length by Israel security personnel, and were placed in detention.

The Savoya Marchetti aircraft is of pre-World War II vintage and is of the type used by the Italian airforce as "geavy bomber" in the Abyssinian war.

The incident followed a series of high altitude flights early this year over Upper Galilee by aircraft apparently carrying out aerial photography, said a spokesman in Haifa. He added that last week a Lebanese civil aircraft carrying U.N.E.F. troops from El Arish to Beirut was forced to land at Lydda airport after being intercepted 10 miles off Zichron Ya'acov.

Beirut radio, quoting an official announcement from the Lebanese Ministry of National Defence, said four Israel military aircraft had intercepted a Lebanese plane taking aerial photographs several kilometres INSIDE Lebanese territory.
