Background: INTRODUCTION: John McEnroe won the London Grass Court Championship for the third time in succession on Sunday (14 June) when he beat fellow American Brian Gottfried 7-6, 7-5 at the Queen's Club. With the All England championships only a week away, McEnroe found himself under enough pressure at times to produce his best form.

SYNOPSIS: Gottfried is serving in the first set which began with eight games going with service, four to each man. There were not many rallies as both men made error after error with their service returns. The score came to 6-6 and a tie-break began.

At one stage McEnroe was three points down in the tie-break. But he took the next four points to win the set 7-6.

The score is 5-5 in the second set. McEnroe had used all his skill to fight back after Gottfried broke his service and won three games in a row. McEnroe went on to break his opponent's service, just when it was needed, to lead six games to five.

McEnroe is now serving for the closely-fought match which he won 7-6, 7-5, in one hour, 50 minutes.

McEnroe won the Stella Artois trophy after being criticised once again for his behaviour on the court. With this victory he has now moved up five positions to fourth place in the men's Grand Prix tennis standings. McEnroe collected 150 points for this win.
