Background: A large gathering of international ice skaters appeared in an ice gala on Thursday (20 March) at the Richmond ice rink in London. All the skaters were stars at the recent Olympics and World Championships and included the legendary Irina Rodnina and Alexander Zaitsev of the Soviet Union, and the Olympic ice skating champion, Robin Cousins of Britain.
SYNOPSIS: Cousins showed the great style that won him Britain's first gold medal of the Winter Olympics last month. He won the figure skating title despite an error in the triple jump and narrowly beat his biggest rival, Jan Hoffman of East Germany.
Robin Cousins said that day he'd not made any firm plans for launching his professional career. He had no idea at this stage of what direction his career would take.
Irina Rodnina and Alexander Zaitsev performed a traditional style Cossack dance. The Soviet couple didn't take part in the world figure skating championships this month because thirty-year-old Rodnina injured her shoulder in Moscow while training for the championships.
Irina Rodnina ranks among the finest ice figure skaters of all time. She was world champion for ten successive years. Pregnancy ended her chances of becoming champion for the eleventh time last year. After winning this year's Olympics, Rodnina and Zaitsev announced their retirement from competitive ice skating.
