• Short Summary

    KOROU SPACE CENTRE, FRENCH GUIANA

The European space rocket Ariane on May 22 blasted off from Kourou Space Centre in French Guiana in one of its most successful missions to date. The three stage rocket, owned by a consortium of European banks and industries, launched a United States communications satellite into orbit above the Equator. This puts the European space company in direct competition with the United States Space Shuttle programme. Both sides are now vying for the lucrative commercial space market. The Ariane team's capture of a US client as their first customer is clearly significant. The company involved, GTE, said that it chose to go with the European project because it was available two years earlier than the Shuttle, and it was cheaper. It could also carry greater weight, thus lengthening the life of the satellite.
