Background: In Italy, a lion tamer locked himself in a cage with eight lions. He wanted to publicise his demand to be allowed to perform anywhere in the country, and he was successful -- his unique protest won a promise from government officials for an urgent review of his case.

SYNOPSIS: The protest took place outside the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment in Rome.

Mario Vulcanelli, a lion tamer and circus manager, had had enough. He had been refused a permit to stage his circus anywhere but in the provincial towns. He was seeking permission to perform throughout Italy.

And when he didn't get action from the Ministry he took to his lion cage. He said he'd stay there until written guarantees were passed to him through the bars.

Vulcanelli's lions -- all eight of them -- seemed indifferent to their master's sense of urgency.

Even his protestations did not move them.

Later in the day, Vulcanelli emerged from the Ministry with a promise that his case would be reviewed. He said he hoped his gesture of goodwill in leaving the cage would resolve the situation. And then he packed up his lions and left.
