Background: SYNOPSIS: Highway 13, the road that run's from Saigon to An Loc has been cut for more than a month. A relief column trying to get thru to An Loc has never gotten closer than 2 miles from the besieged provincial capital. Troops from the South Vietnamese 21 st Division -- not considered among saigon's best -- are still trying to clear the road ....with very little success.
Allieda intelligence believes that the main north Vietnamese force blocking the road has pulled out of this area and small teams of Communist troops have positioned themselves on the side of the road...to keep the road cut, keep the South Vietnamese busy, and protect the North Vietnamese forces who are pulling out. ??? rently the rear guard is doing a good job. Practically Everytimes the South Vietnamese move not the thick underbrush by the side of the road, they run into trouble. Heavy ??? fire and an occasional burst from North Vietnamese machine gun in all it takes to keep the road clearing operation bogged down.
The South Vietnamese troops are well armed and well supplied. But the North Vietnamese are well dug in and apparently determined to hold their positions, even in the face of heavy lines of fire.
This firelight took place 10 miles South of An Loc, well below what was considered the forward clement of the relief column. Although the South Vietnamese have moved North, and despite constant pressure from Saigons to the Anipers have moved in behind them and no where on highway 13 is it safe to travel, not even for a military convoy. It is certainly not safe for civilians Less than a mile from the main battle, NBC News driver Nguven Dinh of was hit in the leg by a snipers bullet. He was the 2nd NBC News employee to be wounded on highway 13 in the past 3 days. He was later taken to a US Army hospital in Saigon where he was reported in satisfactory condition. Arthur Lord.
