Background: Glasgow Rangers, Scottish soccer champions, were humbled by Sparta (Rotterdam) at Ibrox Park, Glaslow, Scotland, March 16, during their second leg quarter-final match of the European Cup tournament. They lost by one goal to nil, and both teams are now level on aggregate. So, for the third time, they must meet again -- at Highbury, London, March 30 -- to decide a semi-final opponent for Eintracht (Frankfurt).
Despite friendly roars of encouragement from a crowd of 85,000 well wishers, Rangers just could not press home their advantage to reach the last four teams in the tournament.
It was a match of brawn, not brain. Both teams were guilty of kick and run tactics. A bunched-up Rangers attack was continually thwarted by a strong Dutch defence. Rangers had most of the play, and most of the corner kicks .. fifteen against Sparta's three .. but just could not instill the old 'magic' fans usually associate with this much respected team.
Half-time came and the score was 0-0. However, twenty minutes from the final whistle, Sparta inside-left De Vries dribbled the ball through and passed to outside-right Van Ede. Closely paced by Ranger's left-back Little, the fast Dutchman eluded him and the goalkeeper Ritchie to make it one goal to nil.
Not even last-minute desperate efforts by seemingly all the Rangers players could level the score.
