Background: Groups of Peronists demonstrating in Buenos Aires on Friday evening(10 Sept) were dispersed by security police with tear gas. The groups, at various points in the city, had been defying a ban on street demonstrations.

The Peronist-led General Confederation of Labour had, the night before, called off a general strike aimed at allowing workers to pay homage to Eva Person, whose body was recently delivered to former dictator Juan Peron in Madrid. The army-backed government of President Alejandro Lanusse had banned the strike and warned it would crack down on demonstrations. Despite a massive show of force by the police, no injuries on arrests were reported.
