Background: Last night--Wednesday night, that is--crowds of rioters, mot of them young men, ran back and forth in the same area, tossing rocks at passing cars and buses and smashing in windows of homes and stores. Police closed off the area but the crowd continued to grow. Officers found weapons on some, they seized those they saw through rocks--but, considering the size of the disturbance, few were arrested. Police Chief William Parker had this to say:
During today, Negro Community leaders met, trying to avert more
