Background: AUSTRALIAN TENNIS CHAMPIONS JOHN NEWCOMBE AND TONY ROCHE, DEFENDING THEIR TITLE AT WIMBLEDON TODAY, (FRIDAY) SCORED AN IMPRESSIVE VICTORY OVER MARTY RIESSEN OF THE UNITED STATES AND TOM OKKER OF HOLLA TO WIN THE MEN'S DOUBLES FOR THIRD TIME. THEY WON 7-5, 11-9, 6-3 A MATCH WHICH LASTED 70 MINUTES.

NEWCOMBE AND ROCHE, WHO FIRST TOOK THE TITLE IN 1965, PLAYED IMPRESSIVELY AFTER SOME FINE RALLIES IN THE OPENING STAGES BY THE CHALLENGERS.

THEY GAINED CONSIDERABLE ADVANTAGE BY CONCENTRATING ON KEEPING THE PLAY IN RIESSEN'S SIDE OF THE COURT, AND IT WAS THE AMERICAN WHO WAS FIRST TO DROP HIS SERVICE.

RIESSEN LOST HIS SERVICE AGAIN IN THE FINAL GAME OF THE SECOND SE??? AND THE EIGHT GAME OF THE LAST SET.

ROCHE CLINCHED VICTORY ON THE SECOND MATCH POINT WITH A TREMENDOUS VOLLEY WHICH RIESSEN COULD ONLY SCOOP INTO THE NET.

THE DOUBLES FINAL, WHICH IS NORMALLY PLAYED ON THE FINAL DAY OF WIMBLEDON, HAD BEEN BROUGHT FORWARD A DAY TO ALLOW THE ALL-AUSTRALIAN MEN'S SINGLES FINAL -- BETWEEN ROD LAVER AND NEWCOMBE -- TO PROVIDE THE CLIMAX TO THE FORTNIGHT OF TENNIS.
