Background: In Zaire....a trial which has captured the attention of much of the country's population has ended with a death sentence being passed on 25 alleged gangsters.
SYNOPSIS: The trial has been televised nationwide from the Supreme Court in the Zaire capital of Kinshasa.
Forty alleged gangsters faced charges of murder, armed robbery, and of receiving stolen goods.
During the two week trial, the prosecution alleged that gangsters had terrorised the people of Kinshasa. The prosecution maintained the gangsters broke into people's houses armed with guns, and plundered without pity.
The judges considered the case for two days before returning verdicts of guilt on 25, but acquitting the remaining 15, accused of receiving stolen goods.
Both the prosecution and defence are appealing against the Court's decision.
