Background: Australian professional golfer, Frank Phillips produced a four under per final round score of 67 at Hong Kong on Sunday (4 March), to win the Hong Kong Open Championship. He had a 72 hole total of 278, and won by one stroke from Ben Arda of the Philippines.

Taiwan's Ho Ming-chung finished third with a total of 281. It was Frank Phillips' second win at Hong Kong - he also won in 1966. First prize was 30,000 US dollars (11,400 pounds sterling).

Fellow Australian, Graham Marsh, had gone into a two stroke lead after the third day of the championship at the Fanling Course. But Phillips' fine last round took him to victory.

Last year, the championship was won by New Zealander, 50-year-old Maori, Walter Goldfrey, with a total score of 272.

At the end of the third day, Australian Graham Marsh had swept into a two stroke lead with a two-under-per-round in windy conditions.

But on the last day of the competition, Australian professional, Frank Phillips, came from behind to produce a four-under-par final round of sixty-seven.

And that was enough to give Frank Phillips victory with a seventy-two hole total of two hundred and seventy-eight.

Phillips putts ... on his way to the GBP11,400 prize. He finished one stroke ahead of Ben Arda of the Philippines. Taiwan's Ho Ming-chung was third.

It was the second time Frank Phillips had won at Hong Kong. He first won in 1966.

Golf is a popular sport in Hong Kong and large crowds attended.
