TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 7: U Thant: "On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the United Nations I would like to express the following wishes for humanity, the peoples of the United Nations. I wish that men cease to hate and kill their fellow men for reasons of race, colour, religion, nationalism or idealogies. I wish that more love, more confession and more understanding dyed the management of human affairs. I wish that the rich and privileged share their blessings with the poor. I wish the leaders of the great nations of our time surmount their differences and unite their efforts for the benefit of all mankind. I pray for rapid restoration of peace in devastated Indochina, for a just and lasting peace in the Middle East, as proscribed by the United Nations, for early involvement of the People's Republic of China in the activities of the whole organisation.

Background: Statesmen from 121 countries converged on San Francisco on Friday (June 26) when a commemorative General Assembly session was held in the magnificent Opera House to mark the 25th anniversary of the organisation. Secretary-General U Thant provided a special birthday gift when he followed a tradition of his own country - Burma - and offered ten wishes addressed to humanity.
The original United Nations charter was signed in San Francisco by 50 nations on June 26, 1945 after three months of deliberations in the Opera House. Only five countries - Albania, Cambodia, the Central African Republic, Cuba and Gambia - were not represented at the anniversary. U Thant's message recalled the custom of "Su Taung" - or bidding good wishes on the day of anniversaries in Burma.
