  • Description

GV INTERIOR: President Alhaji Shehu Shagari enters hall and walks to his seat, in the Institute of Interior Affairs. (2 shots)

CU: Shagari speaking in English and newsmen listening and writing

SHAGARI:"Egypt has been negotiating with Israel. Egypt has not our friend, in not making proper consultation with them. Even the Arabs complain that Egypt has not consulted them properly before they went into these negotiations. And the African countries are also complaining that Egypt has not consulted them. Egypt is going ahead to resume diplomatic relations with Israel without consultation with the member countries of the OAU (Organisation of African Unity). Nigeria is non-aligned. So we are not siding with either the United States or the Soviet Union. We consider their own quarrel as something which is their own.

But the consensus is that we want all the countries of the Third World, and the developing nations to be left alone to run their own affairs, and to solve their own problems without interference either from the East, or from the West. They have been listening to us. Both the British government and the Patriotic Front have been listening to us, accepting advice, for which we are very appreciative, that they recognise our concern, and when we give advice, they listen. And we shall continue in that line in a friendly basis. We do hope that the Patriotic Front will be given a chance, and the (Bishop Abel) Muzorewa group should not be given undue advantage over the others. Already they are at an advantage because they have been there for a long time in government and established themselves."
