Background: Soviet ski-jumpers took the top honours at an international meet held in the Georgian winter resort of Bakuriani on Monday (15 January). Valery Savin won the seventy-metre jump and Yuri Ivanov came first in the ninety-metre event.

SYNOPSIS: It was the sixth time that the competition had been staged in Bakuriani. Aside from the Soviet Union, there were skiers from East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Finland and Norway taking part -- but only the East Germans managed to challenge the superiority of the Soviet jumpers.

Among those taking part in the seventy-metre jump was Sergei Zaichik of the Soviet Union. Few skiers managed a distance of more than eighty metres.

Among those who did was Zaichik's teammate, Valery Savin, with a jump of eighty-seven metres -- and a fine landing.

Watched by Koba Zakadze, on the left, who used to be one of the Soviet Union's top skiers -- Thomas Maisinger of East Germany performed one of the few creditable jumps by a visiting competitor. He finished fourth in the ninety-metre event.

The man with the longest jump was Vladimir Chernayev, with a distance of 104 metres. But he finished second to Yuri Ivanov who, although his jump was only 101.5 metres, received higher points for style.
