    Background: ODESSA, TEXAS, USA

A freak accident cost four lives at Odessa, Texas in the United States on March 16. Two workmen accidentally punctured a natural gas pipeline while digging post holes, causing a massive explosion. Flames, fed by as pouring into the 20 centimetre (8 inch) pipe, lept approximately 182 metres (600 feet) into the air. Eyewitnesses described the fireball as having the appearance of the sun. The fire enveloped nearby vehicles and set alight a petrol station, which in turn threatened more explosions. The people who died were trapped in two caravans parked close to the pipeline. The vans were destroyed by the intense heat, and along with the four deaths one person was listed as missing and five others were injured. Firefighters allowed the blaze to burn itself out overnight, after the gas flow to the pipe was turned off.
