Background: At the Munich Olympic village on Wednesday (5 September), 600 people gathered to commemorate the first anniversary of the tragedy which claimed the lives of 11 Israeli athletes. The ceremony was held in Connolly Street, where the Israeli team was living when eight Arab commandos broke in and took the athletes hostage.
A stone tablet listing the names of the dead, in front of the Israeli quarters, was surrounded by huge wreaths form the West German State and Federal Governments and the International Olympic Committee.
Among the officials at the brief ceremony was Munich Polices Chief Manfred Schreiber, one of the team which attempted to negotie???e with the commandos. Their efforts failed, and in the escape attempt the 11 Israelis, five commandos and a West German policeman were killed.
There too was the Israeli Ambassador to West Germany, Mr. Ben Horin. However, Munich Olympic officials did not attend.
