    Background: BRITTANY, FRANCE

Sailing enthusiasts journeyed to the French coastal province of Brittany on May 25 to watch the launch of a newly-designed catamaran, the "Charante Maritime". The double-hulled vessel was built as a competitor in the forthcoming Quebec to St Malo yacht race, beginning on August 16. Designed by the French team of Joubert and Hievelt, who also designed the French yacht "Diva", a participant in the 1983 Admiral's Cup race off America's East Coast, the "Charante Maritime" will br captained by Pierre Follenfant. Other competitors in the Quebec to St Malo transatlantic race include British round-the-world yachtsman Robin Knox-Johnson. The crew of the winning catamaran will pocket a prize of fifty thousand pounds sterling (75,000 US dollars).
