Background: General Yakubu Gowon, the Nigerian Head of State, has just completed a four-day state visit to Senegal, during which he had cordial talks with President Leopold Senghor. Before he left the two men signed a joint communique re-affirming their condemnation of apartheid and all forms of aggression against any country in Africa.
The visit is seen as a sign of growing friendship between English and French-speaking African countries. General Gowon leaves Lagos again at the weekend to visit Cameroun, where communities of both languages live side by side.
This film shows one of the highlights of General Gowon's visit, a trip to Dakar to the historic island of Goree, once a stronghold of slave-traders.
