Arab Foreign Ministers met at a special session of the Arab League Council on Friday 12 and Saturday 13 February in Tunis, under the chairmanship of its Secretary-General Mr Chedli Klibi, from Tunisia. The special session was requested by Syria after Washington last month vetoed a U.N. Security Council Resolution calling for voluntary sanctions against Israel after its annexation of the Golan Heights last December. Delegates from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Jordan, Iraq, Algeria, the Palestine Liberation Organisation and Syria condemned the United States for its diplomatic support of Israel. But the final text was much milder than an earlier document circulated by Syria, recommending that League member-nations and imports from the United States, withdraw Arab funds and investments from American institutions and sever relations with U.S. firms operating in the Arab world. Mr Chedli Klibi noted that the international community had unanimously condemned Israel's action, and was 'almost unanimous' in recommending sanctions against Israel. But he stressed the need for a spirit of solidarity among Arab nations in order to achieve a just peace in the Arab world.
