Background: LIVERPOOL TOOK THE F.A. CUP AT WEMBLEY TODAY (SATURDAY) WITH A 2-1 VICTORY OVER LEEDS. THE GOALS CAME IN EXTRA TIME, THE FIRST OCCASION SINCE 1947 THAT ANOTHER PERIOD OF PLAY HAS BEEN REQUIRED TO DECIDE THE WINNERS OF THE COMPETITION.

TWO WELL-MATCHED, WELL-DRILLED TEAMS BATTLED THROUGH 90 MINUTES WITHOUT SCORE. LIVERPOOL HAD MOST OF THE PLAY BUT WERE UNABLE TO GET ENOUGH TO THEIR OPPONENT'S GOAL TO GET A GOOD SHOT. BRILLIANT PLAY BY THE LEEDS GOALKEEPER, SPRAKE, DEALT WITH ANY LONG-DISTANCE SHOTS.

A CAPACITY CROWD OF 100,000 WATCHED THE GAME WITH AN ESTIMATED 10,000 LOCKED OUTSIDE. QUEEN ELIZABETH AND HER HUSBAND, PRINCE PHILIP, AND THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. WILSON, WERE AMONG THOSE WHO SAW THE FINAL.

ALL THE EXCITEMENT SEEMED TO BE RESERVED FOR THE PERIOD OF EXTRA TIME. WITHIN TWO MINUTES, ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL ROGER HUNT SCORES FOR LIVERPOOL. THE PASS WAS MADE TO HIM BY GERRY BYRNE, THE LEFT BACK WHO PLAYED MOST OF THE GAME WITH A BROKEN COLLARBONE. A PERFECT PASS RIGHT TO HUNT'S HEAD -- AND THE BALL WAS IN THE NET. WILD SCENES OF EXCITEMENT FOLLOWED THIS.

THEN, EIGHT MINUTES LATER, AGAINST THE RUN OF PLAY, WING-HALF BREMNER BROUGHT LEEDS BACK INTO THE GAME WITH A FIERCE VOLLEY INTO THE FAR CORNER OF THE GOAL. THE SCORE WAS 1-1.

BUT A BRILLIANT GOAL BY THE LIVERPOOL CENTRE-FORWARD IAN ST. JOHN, BROUGHT THE LANCASHIRE CLUB THE CUP. WINGER CALLAGHAN RACED DOWN THE RIGHT AND CROSSED A PERFECT CENTRE TO FIND ST. JOHN CHARGING THROUGH THE CENTRE AND DIVING TO HEAD HOME A SPLENDID GOAL.
