Background: NEW YORK'S NEW METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE - BUILT AT A COST OF 16 MILLION POUNDS STERLING - OPENS NEXT FRIDAY (16 SEPTEMBER) WITH THE WORLD PREMIER OF SAMUEL BARBER'S OPERA "ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA".

THE NEW OPERA HOUSE - IT'S BEEN TEN YEARS IN THE DESIGNING AND BUILDING - IS ON THE LINCOLN CENTRE PLAZA BETWEEN THE PHILHARMONIC HALL AND THE NEW YORK STATE THEATRE.

THE FACADE HAS FIVE, SOARING 96 FOOT (29 METRES) MARBLE ARCHES, FILLED WITH A GREAT EXPANSE OF GLASS. IN THE FOYER ARE TWO HUGE MURALS (WHICH ALONE COST GBP100,000 STERLING) BY MARC CHAGALL.

THE AUDITORIUM SEATS 3,800 PEOPLE AND THERE IS STANDING ROOM FOR 200.

THE ONLY SOUR NOTE BEING STRUCK IS BY THE MUSICIANS, WHO ARE THREATENING TO GO ON STRIKE ON SATURDAY - THE DAY AFTER THE OPENING. A SPOKESMAN FOR THE MUSICIANS' UNION SAID THEY WOULD WALK OUT UNLESS THEY GOT A NEW CONTRACT TO REPLACE THE OLD ONE WHICH EXPIRED TWO AND A HALF YEARS AGO.
